Trump to propose $54 billion in cuts to 'most federal agencies'

Image
Washington (CNN) President Donald Trump's first budget proposal will look to increase defense and security spending by $54 billion and cut roughly the same amount from non-defense programs, the White House said Monday. "This budget will be a public safety and national security budget," Trump said at a bipartisan gathering of US governors at the White House Monday, vowing substantial increases in defense, law enforcement and infrastructure spending. The majority of "lower priority programs and most federal agencies" will see a reduction in their budget as a result of the proposal, according to an official at the Office of Management and Budget speaking with reporters on background. The official said those cuts will come through "unauthorized programs" and places "where there is duplication, where consolidation needs to occur." Few details were provided on how the cuts will be made, but a Trump administration official told

Verratti: The PSG fans inspired me against Barcelona

Image
Verratti What better thing to talk about before an OM-PSG game than the fans. For the first time, we had the visit of Collectif Ultras Paris at Camp des Loges on Friday during training. Much has changed at this level since my arrival at PSG. The first year, when we were champions, we celebrated in Paris. It was an incredible atmosphere, there were supporters everywhere. But I also know that there were more difficult times that day. Despite this, it was the first time I had seen that there was a wonderful fervour around this club. Then there was a period when the atmosphere was not exceptional at the Parc des Princes. Meanwhile, as players, we were watching videos of the 1990s when it was fire. It was difficult to come to the Parc des Princes at that time. We’re starting to rediscover this 12th man at the stadium. Something has changed with the leaders, but also with the players. We made it clear to the club that it was very important for us to have supporters behind us. Afterw

Yes we can... elect Obama president of France?

Image
(CNN)- Could France elect Barack Obama president? Not really -- but that's not stopping the organizers of Obama17, a guerrilla campaign trying to entice the former U.S. president to head to Paris. "It's totally crazy, but the cool thing is that once you get past that, you start thinking that maybe it's possible. Who cares that he's not French? He's Barack Obama," one of the campaign organizers told CNN. They've launched a website and they put up 500 posters of Obama around Paris last weekend, said the organizer. He asked to be identified only as Antoine. They're hoping to get 1 million people to sign  a petition  urging Obama to run. Yes, it's a joke, he admits -- but one with a serious purpose. "We want to show that people are fed up with the politicians here. People are tired about it and they like this joke. It gives people a little fun amid all these scandals," he said. French voters go to the polls April 23 in

Denis Villeneuve, from Quebec dreamer to Hollywood's new king of sci-fi

Image
Villeneuve is surrounded by cast members and producers of his film Incendies at Quebec's Jutra Awards in 2013. It swept the ceremony and also went on to win eight trophies at the English-Canadian Genies. (Graham Hughes/Canadian Press) irector Denis Villeneuve feels lucky. Not only has his film  Arrival  brought him to the Oscars for the second time, but he's currently hard at work on the sequel to  Blade Runner. It's the kind of sci-fi epic Villeneuve could only have dreamt of growing up in the small Quebec town of Gentilly on the St. Lawrence River. As a boy, he would lose himself in science fiction: the bold illustrations of European comic artists Jean Giraud and Philippe Druillet or films such as Stanley Kubrick's space epic  2001 . "I always loved storytelling, and as a child that was my favourite part of my existence — that bubble when I was reading," he told CBC News this month in Los Angeles. Villeneuve considered a career in science,

Pope suggests it's better to be an atheist than a bad Christian

Image
If you're a Christian who exploits people, leads a double life or manages a "dirty" business, perhaps it's better not to call yourself a believer, Pope Francis suggested in a homily on Thursday in Rome. "So many Christians are like this, and these people scandalize others," Francis said during morning Mass at Casa Santa Marta, according to Vatican Radio. "How many times have we heard -- all of us, around the neighborhood and elsewhere -- 'But to be a Catholic like that, it's better to be an atheist.' It is that, scandal." "But what is scandal? Scandal is saying one thing and doing another." In the Catholic Church, it's also a grave offense. Examples of such sins abound, the Pope said, from money launderers to business owners who take beach vacations while stiffing their employees. Francis' sermon, as is customary, was an extended riff on  Thursday's Mass readings , which include a passage from the

Amnesty International accuses military of killing 150 pro-Biafra protesters

Image
Amnesty International has accused Nigerian security forces of killing 150 peaceful pro-Biafra protesters and intimidating media professionals and activists in the country. In south-east Nigeria, security forces led by the military, embarked on a chilling campaign of arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances,” the non-governmental organisation focused on human rights said in a report on Wednesday. “Many individuals are still being detained incommunicado while state security agents have killed at least 150 peaceful pro-Biafra protesters.” In the report it accused politicians of wielding “a toxic, dehumanising ‘us vs them’ rhetoric” and the Nigerian government of using “harsh, disproportionate measures to respond to legitimate security fears”. “2016 was the year when the cynical use of ‘us vs them’ narratives of blame, hate and fear took on a global prominence to a level not seen since the 1930s. No space for Rooney at United as Mourinho holds exit door wide open

Image
The Portuguese doused the flames on talk of Rooney's exit, leaving the decision up to the player as the Chinese transfer window draws to a close Mourinho might have followed up by saying he will not force Rooney out of the club, but the message was clear. After 549 appearances and 250 goals, United’s greatest-ever goalscorer now knows that the manager is not going to break a sweat trying to keep him. With the Chinese Premier League transfer window just six days away from closing, Rooney is the marquee name being linked with the cash-rich league, and Mourinho could have stopped the speculation dead in its tracks by saying there is no way he will allow his captain to leave United any time soon. That, though, was not his course of action.
