Nairobi, Kenya - Kenyans are heading to the polls on Tuesday to elect a president. Voters will also choose governors, members of parliament and senators. But Tuesday's election is different. It is the election in which social media came of age. It is the one where fake news made an entrance and became mainstream. Western PR firms have been hired to polish up the images of candidates and tarnish that of competitors. Attack ads have become common. A record amount of money has been spent to convince millions of registered voters. Taxpayers are footing most of it - a $480m bill to execute the poll, according to Kenya's national treasury. The successful presidential candidate will spend at least $50m to get to the state house, according to Johnson Sakaja, the former chairman of the party that put President Uhuru Kenyatta in power in 2013. The financial strain of the most expensive election in the country's history will be felt long after the August 8 electi...

North Korean state media has slammed the latest round of sanctions approved by the United Nations, calling them a "flagrant violation of our sovereignty." It vowed retaliation against Washington. The UN Security Council unanimously adopted new sanctions Saturday in response to Pyongyang's long-range ballistic missile tests on July 4 and July 28. The measures aim to make it harder for North Korea to make money across the globe. They target North Korea's primary exports -- including coal, iron and seafood -- and attempt to cut off its additional revenue streams by targeting some of its banks and joint ventures with foreign companies. Speaking at the ASEAN Regional Forum on Monday, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho blamed the US for the current situation on the Korean Peninsula and said Pyongyang's "possession of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles is a legitimate option for self-defence in the face of a clear and r...

Nevertheless, Paris is gripped with Neymar fever that has now spanned the full 48 hours since his arrival was declared from Barcelona. Reports in the local media suggest that PSG sold an astonishing 10,000 Neymar strips in their city centre boutiques, but the greatest manifestation of the enthusiasm for the 25-year-old arrived before Saturday’s Ligue 1 curtain-raiser. Amid fireworks, the deafening chant of his name and an electric atmosphere that suggests PSG’s fans believe they are embarking on something very special, the 25-year-old Brazil international received a welcome befitting of the world’s most expensive player. Haidar al-Abadi, Iraqi prime minister, has rejected a call by Muqtada al-Sadr, the oowerful Iraqi Shia leader, to dissolve a controversial militia involved in battling the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group. Hashd al-Shaabi, a Shia unit alternatively called the Badr militia, was established in 2014 with the avowed purpose of fighting ISIL, also known as ISIS, after it captured vast expanses of territory in northern and western Iraq. "The Hashd al-Shaabi … is for Iraq and will not be dissolved," Abadi said in the capital Baghdad on Saturday. "The next phase after liberating the land from Daesh is the battle of the unity of word." Daesh is the Arabic term for ISIL. Hashd al-Shaabi has faced accusations of abuses against civilians in Sunni-majority areas. Last month, the Iraqi army recaptured Mosul, the country's second largest city, from ISIL, which overran the city in 2014. Speaking to supporters on Friday, Sadr called for di...

Few word pairs capture the idiosyncrasies of the English language as effectively as a while and awhile . Both of these terms are expressions of time, and both have been in use for over a century, but one is written with a space while the other is one word. What are the differences in meaning between the two? And what are the appropriate uses of each? These two terms represent different parts of speech. The two-word expression a while is a noun phrase, consisting of the article a and the noun while , defined as “a period or interval of time.” The one-word awhile is an adverb that means “for a short time or period.” Although these definitions are similar, and although the terms can sometimes be used interchangeably, there are a few simple rules that prove helpful in keeping them straight. The noun phrase a while can and often does follow a preposition, such as for or in : “He said he would be home in ...
